Questions & Answers for Marineland HOT Magnum® Filters

Question

Marine HOT canister works for about 5 minutes then starts to spit and sputter. What can I do to fix it?

I have taken it apart and reassembled several times with the same result. When first setting back up the filter works fine. After about 5 minutes it starts having problems with pumping water. This unit was purchased brand new and in use for only about 3 months prior to this happening. The problem did not occur during the first couple months of use.

I'm gonna guess here, but I'm betting the O-ring that fits around the top is missing, or maybe pinched? It sounds like it is getting air. The ONLY way I can see this happening is if that O-ring is missing or damaged. Try some of that silicone paste on it.

There are a couple of trouble shooting guides to help. If you find this is still not solving the problem, please call customer service so that we can trouble shoot further. 800.322.1266.

IF filter makes excessive noise or stops abruptly: Be sure Impeller and Impeller Module are properly installed. Also check Impeller Magnet for wobbling or wear. If evident, replace immediately. Check Sleeve, Carbon/Media Container, or Micron Cartridge for clogging - clean or replace. Rinse Canister. Always use Black Diamond Premium activated Carbon to avoid small particles getting into impeller mechanism.

IF air accumulates in Canister during operation. Inspect Air Ejector Tube. If clogged, use Nylon Cleaning Wand to dislodge dirt. Move Intake away from airstone bubbles or other air source. Also check hose connections ensure that air is not being sucked in. Make sure O-Rings and D-Ring are not dirty, damaged or worn. Replace and/or realign as necessary.

I had to laugh at the one answer about a slide or what ever. I'm sure what you meant was like a small outdoor pond etc.

The product was not "designed" to be used outside in the elements, I'm sure, but.... mechanically I am positive this sucker would work just fine. Place it in a sheltered area to keep water off of it, and direct sunlight. Then make some plumbing for it to pick and exhaust the water and you should be good to go. Someone said they took the exhaust to the store and just bought some tubing that fit it. Another is using it to clean his gravel with a flexible hose. So this product sounds like it is incredibly flexible. Limited only by your imagination.

to fix this. if this is your first time. remove the cap and fill the canister all the way up to the very top with water. place it back on your tank a let it follow. the bubble would go awhile within a few hours.

bubbles are good by the way. adds oxygen to the water. but your filter will not always run like that

Sorry about the problems you are having. If you are experiencing micro bubbles it would mean an air leak somewhere in the system, at the top “D” o ring, at the inlet or outlet, even one of the “exhaust” gaskets inside the filter. We will reach out separately and make arrangements to send you these parts directly.

Question

My filter will not clean the water

I have a 29 gallon HEX, tank. I have always had problems with the water getting dirty quick. I have tried two other filters with no better results. I switched to the HOT Magnum hoping it would solve the problem. I did a 80% water change when I installed the filter. I ran the carbon for 2 days and have now put on the Micron filter and it is still not staying clear. I only have 5 fish in the tank and I usually only feed once a day. Because its a taller tank, Do I need to get the intake down towards the bottom of the tank, as it only goes down less than 1/3 of the way? Ideas? I'm open to suggestions.

i have this same unit HOT Magnum. my water is clear all the time. my advice to you is; use the Media Container add some Carbon inside it to about half way then place a clean U size filter around it. then set it up on your tank. now let it follow, in about 4 days. you water should clear up within the week. and stay like that

Carbon is the key factor, buy some high quality carbon..

remember carbon inside the media container is a need, proper way to use this unit;

carbon helps the little tiny particles in your tank to stick together so the filter picks it up easily. its a process that your hot magnum goes threw to achieve crystal clear water.

i dont use the Polishing Micron Cartridge method, require a lot steps to clean it up an reuse. it great to have!
i have 2, 7inch turtles i have no problem with this filter, so you shouldn't either no matter the size or depth of your tanks. good luck

answer 2
Clarity of water is not totally dependent on the filter system. A lot of factors go into keeping a tank clear. What types are these five fish and how large are they? Do you vacuum the gravel each time you do a water change? Just how cloudy is the water? With taller tanks, quite often you will keep a slight haze to the water due to a lack of circulation from bottom to top. Dropping a filter intake down does not help this issue, but adding a small bubble wand with an air pump does. Also, sometimes you may have a stubborn bacterial or dissolved organic bloom, and using a product such as Tetra Water Clarifier will clear up the issue.

You are not getting it sealed. Make sure you fill it literally to the top edge of the canister. Place silicon lubricant around the D ring, then slowly lower the cover onto the canister. Water will trickle out and down the sides, and this will give you a good seal.

Not continuously, no, as it will clog quite fast. Yes, it will clear up cloudy water, if it is due to organic matter, etc. You have a lot of filtration for that tank. How large are the goldfish, how often are your water changes, and how much are you feeding? You really should not be having cloudy water issues.

Sand that gets into any filter can be highly corrosive to the moving parts. So long as you take precautions, the H.O.T. (Hang On Tank) filter will work fine. Whenever your sand bed is stirred up, such as during tank maintenance, you will need to cut off the filter. Sometimes you can have aquatic life in your tank that will be good at stirring up the sand bed. This can be unpredictable, so if you do have this situation you may need to cover the strainer on the intake-tube with nylon material to help prevent sand from being pulled into the filter. You can also remove any extension tubes from the intake to shorten it and thus keep the strainer higher up in the tank. Also, it would be a good idea to regularly take out the impeller and clean it and also the area where the impeller fits in the motor. You can use distilled white vinegar to clean with so long as you rinse the parts well afterwards.

I have had a HOT Magnum for about 4 weeks now. I am getting microscopic bubbles and it has become louder.

I recently changed my charcoal and now have microscopic bubbles. I removed the cover again and made sure it was completely full of water, but I still have the bubbles even after it has run overnight. I have also noticed it has become more noisy (not water noise), like the motor is more noisy. I cleaned it thoroughly when I replaced the charcoal.

Hello,
This is usually related to gaskets and O-rings. Take the intake tube and outlet tube off the unit and inspect it. See if you have the O-rings on them. If you do not, then this is the problem.
Also, make sure all your gaskets are in the right position.
As for the noise, this is most likely related to something falling down in where your impeller spins. This is usually carbon from your container.
Make sure you don't have air bubblers near your intake tube on the filter, which could cause it to take in air and shoot it back out.
If these tips don't help contact us at consumersupport@unitedpetgroup.com or 1-800-526-0650. We'll need your name, address, and phone number if you email us.

Question

amount of media

i have a hot magnum on my 29 gallon freshwater tank, and when i set it up, i filled the media container with a combination of carbon and ammo-lock. this seema like a tremendous amount for my tank and i was wondering about the possibility of utilizing some of the space with "bio-balls" or the like. i figure i could steal one if my wife's nylon knee-highs to hold the media seperate. if so, should the media go in the top or bottom of the canister???? if i do need to fill the canister, what would be a recomended interval for changing it???

Hello,
Yes you could fit some bioballs in the carbon container. The carbon and/or ammonia chips should be at the bottom first. It would most likely make its way to the bottom anyway, being smaller and more dense. You could purchase a media bag at the pet store to put some bioballs in. Nylon should also work. Just make sure that you don't inadvertently damage the carbon container by overfilling it. You would need to change the carbon/ammonia chips about once a month in most cases.
