Questions & Answers for Marineland Magnum 350 Canister Aquarium Filters

Question

I have a 50 gallon freshwater aquarium running on a Magnum 350 filter. I have a large pleco whose feces keeps clogging up the stariner on the filter.

Does any know what other strainer I can use to help with this problem? I would need a strainer that fits on the end that has larger slots.

We do not make a different strainer. If he is the only fish in the tank, you can remove it, but of course his feces will then clog the filter. Sounds like he needs a larger tank perhaps.

In my opinion it depends on the tank. If you have smaller fish that seem to struggle with to much current they are great! If you have a long but shallow tank it will help your circulation of clean to dirty water transfer better. I have a long but shallow tank with my pickup tube in the center and the bio-wheels the far back corners. This achieved the perfect slow cyclone with out upsetting the small fish in the tank. I can let it go as far as 3 months without major cleaning. My levels stay almost perfect and the water is crystal clear.

The Bio Wheel portion of the Magnum 350 is your biological filter. It removes nitrogenous waste and other by-products produced by the fish, leftover food, etc.

Yes, you can use DE, but I'm not sure about the food grade type. I would stick with what is sold in fish shops, to be safe. In general, you use about half a cup.

I had my first Magnum 350 for 15 years and it finally worn through the plastic turbine area. This occurs after sand and charcoal wear away at the turbine and the sleeve it fits into. Fifteen years is an excellent run.

You would want to fill the carbon canister about 1 inch below the top; this will allow plenty of room for the lid, and help to prevent it from overflowing out into the rest of the filter.

Question

Can I use this filter for a turtle aquarium?

I know that turtles are messy animals but I am looking for a solution that makes it cleaning my aquarium less frequent. I have a 40 gal breeder aquarium with two 5 inch sliders and currently have two hang-on the side filters which I have to clean once a week if not more. Will the Magnum 350 filter help with this? If not, do you suggest any other Marineland canister filters?

Yes, it will definitely do a much more thorough job than a hang on the back filter. However, it is also more work to maintain. We would recommend the C-360 instead. This one is very easy to maintain, and has more flexibility, as well as more media.

Question

extending the outlet diffuser

I purchased a Magnum 350 to use in my 165 gallon turtle tank. I only fill up the tank about half-way, to allow the turtles room to bask, as a result the outlet diffuser is about 12 inches above the water's surface. I need advice as to how I can extend the outlet so it will be long enough to be under the water's surface. Thank you for your time.

Just pull the diffuser off and use vinyl tubing you can buy by the foot to attach it to the elbow of the outlet tube. The i.d. of the tubing will need to match the outer diameter of the outlet tube. It is easiest to take the outlet tube to the store with you to be sure, but it should be 5/8" i.d. tubing.

Question

Melted hole in plastic around impeller area

We have the Magnum 350 canister filtration system that we purchased about 6 months ago. We noticed that there was no water coming out of the filter out take in the tank so we shut everything off and disconnected the hoses from the canister to see what was going on. We noticed that there was water leaking out of the canister and with a better inspection of the filter we discovered a melted hole in the plastic by the magnetic impeller at the base of the canister.

I was wondering what could have caused this? Is this covered under the warranty?

Under normal circumstances, the water flowing through the filter acts as a coolant to the motor which engages the impeller. If the impeller becomes worn or unseated, a lesser flow rate can occur and over time, cause the water to cease to be drawn into the filter, potentially causing an overheating of the motor. Please call our customer service line at 1-800-526-0650 for warranty replacement information.

Question

What are the physical measurements/dimensions of the bio wheel in the Magnum 350 Pro?

I want to purchase the Magnum 350 Pro for an aquarium (100 gallons) I have in South America. However, they construct aquariums using all glass for the support. Consequently, the glass support adhere to the top of the aquarium leave only a 10" by 2.5" space to install the filter system. I want to be sure the bio wheel will be able to fit. Otherwise I will buy the Magnum 350 without the bio wheel.

There is no way the biowheels (you would have two of them) will fit in that small of a space. Each biowheel housing by itself is approximately 8-10" in length.

They don't always turn fast and unit to unit I see lots of variation across my tanks. Generally this is either the wheels are not seated correctly (unlikely) or your flow is too low. In the hang on style they sell with media cartridges and wheels this is very common. your wheel spins great and then over time gets real slow. You pull your media and it runs great....flow has gotten to low through the media.

Are you sure you have the hoses right? There is no switch it only runs one way. Impeller always draws water one direction and pressure forces it out the other. Unless I am mistake...not looking at mine...water is pulled in through the line with only a connect to the lid. The impeller draws water through the sleeve and basket then and drives it out the black tube attached to it that sits behind your basket, the one connected the lid and thus to the exit line as well.

Not weird - you just put the tubing on backwards. You have the out on the in and the in on the out. Customers do this from time to time. Just switch them back and you'll be fine.

Hello,

We do not have enough information to ascertain whether you need a part or not. We generally recommend soaking the impeller assembly in distilled white vinegar for 1-2 hours, cleaning out the area it sits in with white vinegar, checking the tubing for kinks or clogs (disconnect valves too), and the gaskets for any damage.

If these tips do not help, please call us at 1-800-322-1266.

I am not sure if you are speaking of the height of the entire bio wheel assembly or the height of the space between the outflow & the water level. Either way, you will need at least 5 inches about above the aquarium, for the unit.

Question

Impeller Magnet for Marineland Magnum 350

Replaced my diatom filter with the magnum 350. I use the 350 once a month for 3-5 days to clean out my saltwater aquarium (wet-dry biological filtration). I take it apart to clean and dry it out. I had to replace the impeller magnet 3 times during the last 3 years because it swells up and cracks its plastic coating, It seems saltwater seeps under the coating where the magnet metal breaks the seal-coating. Is it possible to seal or coat the magnet when replacing it?

The only thing to fix nitrates is massive and frequent water changes, additional filtration will help prevent build up but water changes are the solution, at least 30% a week until the tank stabilizes. Knowing size and # of fish would help also, so include that in next post.
