Question

My Magnum 350 does not have the water flow it use to.

I'm running just the outer filter Media sleeve on the Magnum 350 and my water flow is not pushing the water through like it use to. It's six months old. I cleaned the intake and outflow hoses, the strainer on the intake, the media holder but it's still not flowing good. What else can I check?

Pull out the impeller and magnet assembly and thoroughly clean it. We recommend soaking in distilled white vinegar. You should also swab out the reservoir where they sit, with vinegar and a q tip. If you are using carbon too, be sure to change that every 3-4 weeks as it can clog and pack tight.

If you continue to have issues, please call or email us directly.

Question

My C-350 does not hace the water flow it use to.

I'm running my C-350 with a new filter floss at the moment and it doesn't have the water flow it use to. I cleaned the hoses, checked for kinks and made sure it wasn't sucking air. It's 3 months old. What could be the issue?

Actually, it is a C360. Some things to check that you have not already checked:

- remove the impeller, clean it, and clean out the reservoir it sits in
- remove the valve block and clean out the nozzles, both the ones on top and the ones underneath, with a q tip
- replace the polishing cloth, rinse out the bio media and sponges
- make sure the water level is to the top of the tank, clean out the intake and outlet tubes.

I'm not sure why you are experiencing this issue, but you are the first person I've had this complaint from in the 8 years I have been handling these products. This filter is a proven design, having been on the market for more than 20 years. If you give us a call at 1-800-322-1266, we will be happy to try to do some troubleshooting to see what might be happening with yours, and offer you some new disconnect valves.

Yes, it has the micron cartridge which will work the same as a diatom filter. You can also add diatomaceous earth to the filter with the micron cartridge in place.

I have also used our Bio Spira product to clear out algal blooms, which I find easier to do.....

I set the filter up exactly like the directions and it is working great! Make sure your water level in the tank is to the top, the canister needs at least a 22" head to prime correctly, and a good seal. Also, check that the impeller is connected to the magnet correctly. If they are not, the magnet will spin, but the impeller will not create the vortex needed.

I think it best you call into us so we can get some information regarding what is going on. make sure that any time you remove the motorhead, you have the valve block locked off and disconnected from the motorhead. The tubing should still be attached to the valve block, but it won't leak if it is locked off properly.

We really need you to call in as there are a lot of things that you may not have done correctly, and we'd need to talk you through the set up. Essentially, make sure you have the water level in the tank to the top of it, the outlet tube must be connected to the portion of the cover that connects to the exhaust tube, your disconnect valves must both be opened (knob turned parallel to tubing), lubricant applied to o ring on cover.

When cleaning it, be sure to soak it in distilled vinegar for about 20 minutes. Swab out the area it sits in as well, with a q tip and vinegar. Check the impeller for scratches, warping, etc. If you find anything like that, give us a call.

Question

Magnum 350 filter not keeping water level inside filter

I have had my magnum 350 for about a year on a 55 gallon saltwater tank. In the last 2-3 months, it has not been operating as it should. After cleaning, the filter starts out working fine. But after a short period of time (maybe a couple of hours), it starts to lose water in the main chamber. If I turn the filter off and essentially burp it, the water level will go back up. But I will have the same problem later that day. I have checked all the gaskets and the o-ring to make sure they are present and not damaged. They are all fine. I have also gone back to the diagram to make sure the filter has been reassembled correctly. It seems like air is getting into the system and it could be a seal issue, but I have checked all the gaskets and o-ring. I do not know what else to check for. Any ideas?

Oh, its definitely a seal issue. It's a pretty slow one though, so it is not surprising that the o rings all appear fine. We would recommend replacing the ones around the canister and the intake tube.

Question

filters on timers

I have (3) 55 gal. tanks (all freshwater), each tank has a Magnum 250 and a Fluval 406. That's a lot of filtration for that size tank. There is a lot of buffeting of the fish (all small sized livebearers). By having only one filter running at a time the buffeting became minimal. However when I put the 250 on with the Fluval the water became crystal clear, so I don't want that to change. The media is ceramic rings, filter fiber, etc. I put the filters on each tank on a staggered time so that only one of the filters is running at one time. there is about 9 hours of time that the one filter is not operating. My question is this: Does the non operation of the filter allow for a build up nitrates/ammonia? What really concerns me if that is the case then that build up would cycle back into the tank at next start up.One of the tanks has been in operation for at least 20 years, and after putting the 250 on the tanks are stunning. I have always gone by the color and liveliness of the fish and at the moment they outstanding. I have been keeping fish for 40 plus years.

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this idea. Yes, by sitting still, the ammonia and nitrite levels can certainly increase inside the filter, essentially because there is no water movement, hence, no oxygen being provided to keep your aerobic bacteria alive. Secondly, if the impellers get any sludge or buildup on them, the filters may not re-prime. This could be a major issue if you are not home at the time.

Question

Carbon Container Screen Is Collapsing

I have a Magnum 350. I recently used the carbon container but only had enough carbon media to fill the canister about half way. I checked the filter about a week later because the water output was severely reduced. When inspecting the filter, I found that the screen was crushed or collapsing inwards toward the core set. I purchased additional activated carbon media, but it was not Black Diamond Activated Carbon, and had larger grains. I removed the used carbon and replaced it with the new. The filter ran fine for a few days and then the water output decreased again. When I inspected the filter, some carbon grains had gotten into the impeller assembly and housing. So I ordered a new carbon canister and when it arrived, I added fresh activated carbon (not Black Diamond though). After only a day, the water flow went down again and the new canister starting collapsing inward the same as the previous. Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong or what to replace to correct the water flow?

Do you have the core in the center, with a black cap on top of it, that has slits in it? This piece should be in the middle of the carbon container to keep it from collapsing. You want to fill the container to the bottom of the black cap, and no higher, to avoid the collapsing container and carbon from getting into the impeller area.

Our Magnum 350 is a wonderful filter. We have only this filter rated at 100 gallons however, and you stated that you have an aquarium over this size. Because of this and also due to the type of fish you have co-habitating in your tank, we would recommend you also add on a secondary, supplemental filter to assist with the added waste load.

Question

How often are you suppose to replace the carbon?

I no its going to vary based on tank size, type and number of fish but just a general idea would help. I have a 75 gallon with a very large oscar. Ive asked a few stores and I've heard everything from every 2 weeks to 6 months. I haven't even set it up yet until I know about how often to change it.

Yes, it does ultimately depend on tank size and your stock load (amount of fish). For a normally stocked tank where overfeeding does not occur and the filter is adequate for both the stock load and aquarium size, we recommend changing out the filter cartridge every 2-4 weeks. Waiting too long can cause unwanted results as the carbon will begin to leach the impurities it absorbed if it surpasses its saturation point.
