Question

water level for magnum 350 pro

I recently purchased a Magnum 350 pro filter for my 55 gallon turtle tank. the directions say to fill the water up to past the outtake elbow. the problem is this puts my turtles basking site about 2 inches from the top of the tank. Is this completely necessary or can I lower the water level below this out take?

You have purchased a great Marineland system. If you don't mind the noise & quick evaporation from splashing, the system will work fine with the outlet not being fully submerged.

can i purchase the shaft only for an impeller (prim150br) ?

I am sorry to hear this. The shaft is not sold without the impeller blades for this unit. You should be able to place a net or sponge over the intake of the tube. This will prevent sand from entering the unit.

Sorry, this is a long discontinued item and Wal-Mart used to carry the cartridges but also haven't in a while. I also wasn't able to find anyone online who still carries this item. I'm not sure what size your tank is but enclosed are some other filter options you may want to consider.

Question

Bio wheel filter 100 intake length

I have a 20 gal hexagon tank that is 24 inches tall. How long should the intake tube for the penguin 100 filter be? I used all of the parts included and it is about 12 inches from the bottom. I don't see an extension tube for sale that is longer than 4 inches. I've read where most people say they have their filter intake 2-3 inches from the gravel but I don't see how I can do that with the available parts.

If possible, move the bubble wand away from the intake. Both the filter & the wand will add oxygen to your water. You would want to keep those on separate ends of the tank.

The general rule of thumb is to replace all filter media (carbon, resin chips and floss) monthly.

The high ammonia is a separate problem, partial water change then add SafeStart to supply the bacteria that remove ammonia. Add EasyBalance weekly to maintain ideal pH where the bacteria work best.

Hello,

It would be okay for the filter to do that, but not for the fish. They need it 24/7. They should not be struggling with that flow rate, as it is appropriate for any type of fish in a ten gallon tank. Check your water quality for ammonia and nitrite. You can place large plants or decor in front of the filter to break up the flow.

Question

Why do the filter inserts get clogged so quickly

I have 2 Penguin 150's running on my 30 gallon tank...I only use one filter insert at a time (in each filter of course) and very, very often it is back flowing within a day or two. Believe me when I say there is not an overfeeding situation...and my tank is vacuumed twice a week. I am spending a small fortune on the inserts...any ideas, hints or advice...

Hello,

If the filter cartridges themselves are actually clogged after a few days, then you either have too many fish for the tank, they are too big for the tank or you are overfeeding. If they do not appear clogged (they would be covered from top to bottom in brown or reddish green goo), then you probably just need to take the filter system apart and clean it. Most likely the impeller is dirty or has hair wrapped around it so the flow rate of the filter has slowed down tremendously, causing the water to back up in the filter system. We recommend hot water and distilled white vinegar, every two months, for cleaning the filter system.

Question

Am I able to purchase a new pump/filter for my son's fishtank?

I bought the hexagonal aquarium kit for my son a few years ago. It appears that the pump/filter thing is no longer working because the water is not getting sucked up to then be filtered with the bio-wheel and filter cartridge. Can I buy this part? The details on the part are as follows: 120 VAC, 60 Hz, 12 amp Aquarium equipment pump PFES 02/02D/03/05HX/05CN/07HX/PL-TE2/TE2D/TESHX.

Hello,

Yes, all of the parts are available separately through our website or retail pet stores. Have you tried cleaning the impeller first? Usually, this needs to be done every couple of months to keep it in good working order. You just open the bottom of the pump to pull it out, and clean it. Use a q-tip to clean up inside the pump as well.

Question

what would be the best filtration unit for my softshell turtle, .

Just purchased a 75gal marineland aquarium. Need a new filtration system. Was looking at your multi-stage canister C-series.filter media. His water can get pretty stinky, to say the least. There will be only 1turtle in tank (shell size 11.5L"x9 W roughly) I'm considering making the aquarium 3/4 water 1/4 dry. I've had him for 6yrs, we had buried 56 eggs in the backyard, 22 of them hatched. I will take any suggestions from the filters to design layout. I already know i won't be able to move aquarium to clean out. So i need a real good filter. He prefers sand to bury himself but most likely will be using rocks. Thank you Jeani

First off, sand would not be a good idea with a filter. The sand will clog the unit and cause the impeller to need to be replaced often.
Whisper Intank filters are great for the set up you are needing. You could even add multiple Intank filters throughout the tank. Good luck and keep up the good work!

Question

C-160 filter rattle

Just bought my c-160, my second one now. It took a while for me to get it going but now that it is going, it is rattling. I have taken all measures to make sure it is all clean, the impeller is in good shape no cracks and the white washer is fine. Both ends of the shaft have the rubber grommet caps are in place properly. What else could be wrong? When I said it took me a while to get it going, I meant the primer was not giving enough push or pull to start the flow. I ended up filling both hoses with water and then running it. That helped a lot where as my previous one (C-160) had the power to suck it in. Plus it was very quiet. I am hoping the rattle will just go away, but so far,(3hours) it has not. Suggestions please?
